After Your Vaccine

Common Side Effects

It’s normal to experience mild adverse reactions after getting vaccinated. This tells us that your body is building immunity against the disease. We advise you to get plenty of rest and stay hydrated in the following days after immunization!

Fever

A fever within the first 24 hours is common and can last between 1-3 days. It’s often accompanied by body aches, chills, general fatigue and headaches.

Sore or Red Arm:

Pain, redness and swelling around the injection site is normal. It usually occurs in the first 24 hours and can last up to 5 days. Muscle weakness in the injected arm is also normal.

Anaphylaxis:

In rare cases, severe allergic reactions can be triggered within 2 hours of immunization causing swelling of the eyes, lips, tongue, throat and airways. When this happens, an epinephrine shot is immediately administered to reverse the reactio

Dizziness

Rare but not uncommon, dizziness and fainting may be experienced. This is why we advise you to take a seat in our clinic for 15 minutes following your vaccination. Yourself and our doctors will have peace of mind sending you home healthy and feeling great.

Delayed Reactions:

Although not as common, some shots can trigger a delayed reaction like a rash or fever 1-4 weeks following immunization.

Please Note: If you or your child experience severe symptoms after you leave our clinic, please seek medical attention or call 911 immediately. This includes a severe allergic reaction or other symptoms like a seizure, trouble swallowing or inability to move.

Which vaccinations do I need to get?

Required vaccines depend on multiple factors:

Which country am I traveling to? Traveling brings you into contact with locals, animals and insects which may carry diseases not found in Canada. For a full list of countries’ required vaccinations, click here.

When am I traveling? Please schedule your travel consultation with us 4-6 weeks before you travel as many vaccinations must be done a month in advance.

What is the current state of my health? If you have an autoimmune condition, are taking immunosuppressants, or are pregnant or nursing, it’s vital that you consult with one of our doctors.

Are all of my vaccinations up to date? As rare as some diseases are in Canada, they may be common in the country you’re traveling to. We would be happy to take a look at your vaccination passport and keep your immunizations up to date.
